Short answer

A grocery shelf QR identifies a specific store product. Shoppers can scan it from a mobile browser, choose a quantity and add the item to a Digital Basket. Staff can separately use authenticated shelf QR scanning for stock counts or refill operations. The QR label itself does not take payment or automatically measure physical stock.

Choose label locations shoppers can reach

Place each QR where a customer can clearly connect the code to one physical item. Avoid using one ambiguous label for two flavours or sizes. Test readability under aisle lighting and from an ordinary smartphone.

Use the same product identity for staff and shoppers

A stable product-associated code can make shelf refill and customer self-scanning easier. Staff inventory actions still require authorized access; simply scanning a public shelf QR must not grant stock-editing permission.

Explain the end of the shopping journey

A Digital Basket is a pre-built shopping list. At the counter, the shopper supplies a checkout code and the cashier retrieves the basket, verifies items and completes the sale.

Start small and measure exceptions

Pilot a few frequently sold shelves. Watch for incorrect links, items with missing price, abandoned baskets and quantity mismatches. Fix signage before printing QR labels across the store.

Practical implementation checklist

  1. Pick one aisle with stable product labels.
  2. Create and verify each associated item in the catalogue.
  3. Print a code beside the correct product.
  4. Scan as a shopper and verify the price and tax.
  5. Load the basket at the counter and complete a test bill.

Questions store owners ask

Can scanning a shelf QR pay for groceries?
